. . . because we know how much Your Coaching Matters
The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as follows:
“Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” (ICF Code of Ethics, June 2015).
Your Coaching Matters
Your Leadership Matters Inc. provides value-added executive coaching to enable individuals to develop strategies that will increase their effectiveness in managing people and relationships. We can help you with “Your Coaching Matters”. Building the capability of internal talent can significantly enhance an organization’s efforts to increase employee engagement and retention. As well, for situations where a manager/leader is experiencing difficulties with the effectiveness of their leadership, coaching can provide an opportunity to build new capabilities, resolve the challenge and avoid the expense and difficulty associated with removing a manager/leader from his/her role with the organization.
Different Coaching Assignments
There are a wide variety of coaching assignments that are common. One way to look at coaching assignments is to look at the ways coaching covers a continuum, ranging from interventions where the coach plays the expert role, to interventions where the coach is a facilitator of client awareness, learning, growth, and choice. This framework for looking at different types of coaching assignments is adapted from the work of Lucy West and Mike Milan in The Reflecting Glass: Professional Coaching for Leadership Development, and is similar to the classifications from the Center for Creative Leadership.
1. Coaching for a Leader’s Agenda
The Coach engages in a process with a leader to address whatever issues – professional, personal, business – that the leader chooses to bring forward. The Coach is a guide and confidant to enable the leader to determine the path forward.
2. Coaching for Performance
The Coach engages in a coaching process to support the leader in developing strategies to enhance the leader’s effectiveness.
3. Coaching for Development
The Coach engages in a process over time with a leader to support them in developing themselves. This could include the quality of their thinking, their emotional intelligence, gaining perspectives, thinking through a variety of choices, enhancing their personal well-being through better work-life balance, etc.
4. Coaching for Skills Development
The Coach’s functional expertise and tutoring ability are used to support the leader in acquiring specific skills required for effective performance, and in applying the skills successfully in leader’s context.
5. Coaching as Consulting
The Coach’s functional expertise is partnered with the leader’s firsthand knowledge of the context to create and implement a solution to a specific challenge.
